Richy's 1970 XW Ford Falcon Restoration - Pt 7 First Round of Plating
Restoring original parts is part of the lengthy process of bringing the tired XW to its former glory. One of the processes we wanted to get sorted immediately was to send all parts that needed to be replated sent away. Chrome plating, in particular, has long lead times and can really hold up progress down the track. Ford used two different zinc plating colours back in 1970, silver and gold. Part of the fun of restoring original parts is trying to depict what colour zinc the part originally was (due to rust or ageing destroying the plating).
This was Richy's first experience with re-chroming parts and unknowingly a valuable lesson. Whilst we were warned that some of the cast steel parts could have impurities that would show in the finished chrome we took a gamble went ahead with the process. Unfortunately, some of the parts did come back with small defects in the chrome but overall we are satisfied with the finish.

What a massive job you have taken on, especially with the rust in that car … You are off to a very good start.
