Up for sale we have a rare 1964 ½ Mustang Convertible finished in Wimbledon white with bright red interior. This Mustang rolled off the showroom floor with the rare D code engine package (289-4V as opposed to the usual 260) and 4 speed toploader gearbox.
This Mustang was originally imported by Mr Cars Gold Coast and later sold to MOCA member Ian Flanders who partially disassembled the convertible to restore it himself. Robin Bath bought it off Ian and has owned the vehicle for a little over 20 years. Robin is one the Qld Mustang Owners Club (MOCA) founding members and a concourse judge for many years.
The Mustang underwent extensive restoration approximately 12 years ago by Ron Walters. The Mustang retains almost all of its original date coded steel with the exception of the LH door skin, radiator support and tail light panel. The restoration never went as far as detailing the paint dabs and markings (an easy and rewarding project for the future owner).
The matching numbers engine was reconditioned including hardened seats and valves to run unleaded fuel. The gearbox also received the same treatment and the diff had new bearings fitted. The tail shaft scored new universal joints, and everything was given a fresh paintjob to match the rest of the build.
The original carby was rebuilt and new fuel lines installed.
F&H motor trimmers installed the new upholstery and convertible top.
The car was built with all new brightwork, lights, weatherstripping, suspension etc. Originally it was a drum brake car but has had an early Scott Drake disc brake conversion using a local booster and falcon master cylinder.
Seat belts are not original as Qld compliance requirements mandated that Australian approved belts had to be installed.
This Mustang has probably done less than 1000 miles since restoration but being an older restoration, some aspects of the Mustang are showing some wear and tear. Overall, the car presents extremely well, starts first go and drives beautifully. This 1964 ½ Mustang Convertible is ready to hit the road, win trophies or park up and appreciate in value.
